Window

A barred window is an immediately recognisable symbol of prison life. Literally and metaphorically, windows both threaten individual freedom and provide a means of escape. Whether viewed through bars, wire mesh, or grimy security class, the frame of a window also establishes the shape of the connections between inside and outside. Even the most restricted and mediated view might prompt reflections on less tangible connections or the journeys taken (or not taken) over the course of a life.
